The Mains and Kessels Road Intersection Upgrade project is being funded by the Federal Government, to execute through the Department of Transport and Main Roads, to improve all aspects of traffic movements along the Brisbane Urban Corridor.
Transport and Main Roads has appointed Baulderstone Queensland Pty Ltd as the Principal Contractor for the Project.
The Mains Road and Kessels Road intersection is the junction of two major transport corridors. Kessels Road is part of the Brisbane Urban Corridor (BUC), which is an 11.5 kilometre corridor between the Gateway Motorway and the Ipswich Motorway and part of the National Land Transport Network. The project will grade separate the through movements along Kessels Road by construction of an underpass below Mains Road. Along with this the intersection itself will be upgraded, providing an enhanced bus route with bus priority along Mains Road.
The Contractors Works fall within the Griffith Arterial Road (Kessels Road) and the Nathan Connection Arterial Road (Mains Road north of Kessels), which are under the control of DTMR. Other Project works (Mains Road south of Kessels, Local Road Works, Property Works and Service Works) involve assets controlled by Brisbane City Council, Utility Owners and local Businesses and Residents.
The Project Site will also extend along both Mains and Kessels beyond the intersection, to complete associated road widening, turning lanes and ramps, traffic signalling, urban design and the relocation of PUP services. This will include the demolition and construction of a new bridge across Mimosa Creek on Kessels Road.
The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2014.
